What Is Cupping Therapy?
We are delighted to now offer cupping as part of our treatment repertoire at The Physiotherapy Place. Cupping therapy is an ancient traditional healing method that has been used all around the world for thousands of years, and has become more popular in recent years as we have learnt more about the effects and benefits that it has. Cupping Therapy involves the use of plastic cups onto the skin creating suction force to bring the soft tissue and skin into the cup. The cups remain on the area for around 2-3 minutes before gently being removed.
How Does Cupping Therapy Work?
Cupping complements deep tissue massage as it helps to treat muscular tension and pain. But whereas massage works by putting pressure on the muscles to release them, cupping does the opposite and lifts the tissues up, separating them and increasing blood flow by expanding the blood vessels.
What Are The Benefits Of Cupping?
There are numerous benefits of cupping including:
increasing blood flow to the targeted region
reduce muscle tension
draining excess fluids and toxins
loosening adhesions such as scar tissue
improving oxygen flow into the muscles
help to resolve tension headaches
reducing symptoms from osteoarthritis
Who Is Cupping Therapy For?
Cupping therapy is used mostly for people who experience muscle tension in their neck, back and legs. This treatment can be ideal for people who are involved with sports, enjoy going to the gym or have a job that is either manual or requires them to be at a desk.
Will There Be Bruising After Treatment?
After the cups have been removed dark circles that appear like bruises can be left on the skin. However these are not bruises like we see from trauma, they are stagnant blood, cellular debris or pathogens brought to the surface during the treatment for the body to flush away in its lymphatic system. These can take around a week to 10 days to disappear.
How Will I Feel After Treatment?
After the treatment you could feel quite tired, similar to if you had just completed a workout. Likewise, the day after you might be a little sore like you would after a deep tissue massage. It is recommended to drink plenty water and take it easy for the rest of the day. It is suggested to avoid any high intensity exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
Who Should Avoid Cupping?
Cupping is generally a very safe treatment technique. However there are certain conditions where it is not recommended. These include patients who are being treated for cancer, people who have a pacemaker, people suffering from a blood disorder, or if you have an abscess or open wounds. It is also not recommended if you are recovering from a dislocation or broken bone.
